Lately: the Photo Shoot and Some Summer Plans

Well, we did it. The house got photographed!

I’m relieved, grateful, excited, happy….. but I also feel a little dazed, dumbfounded and directionless because I almost don’t know what to do with myself now that it’s done!

The shoot went really well, I think. I learned a lot about how much work goes into putting a story together and it was so interesting to see what they chose to include and exclude.

It was a very low key and fun day thanks to Tara McCarthy, HOME’s art director (whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with twice now) and photographers (and Emmy Award-winning filmmakers!) Anthony-Masterson. Everyone was lovely to work with and so very patient with all of my input. Ahem. I think I was delirious, I just couldn’t shut up…. Here’s the crew in my hallway. And look, you finally get to see the zebras! Wait until you see the shot they got for the article. (So good!)

The day was a whirlwind so, of course, I didn’t have my wits about me to document it like I wanted. So apologies for not having much to show you from behind the scenes like I had promised. (I should know by now that that’s what always happens so I should just give up trying!)

The one shot I did get was this one in the kitchen at the end of the day….. just before we ate the cake. The day before the shoot, I was whining about needing a prop for this setup so my dear husband volunteered to bake a cake. When I declared it not tall enough(!), he baked a second one to create this four-layer beauty and saved the day. I tell you I’m very lucky to be surrounded by all these patient people!

Anyway, when the issue comes out in the fall, you’ll be the first to know. And in the meantime, throughout the summer, I’ll share some of the spaces they didn’t shoot.

So now what? I have to say things feel a little anticlimactic around the house now. I guess it’s understandable considering how long this whole thing had been in the works. But sometimes anticlimactic is good. After a really intense couple of months, a little downtime is more than welcome! I’m also starting to shift into summer mode. I’m looking forward to throwing dinner parties, hosting friends from out of town and a couple of once-in-a-lifetime trips. When I can, I’ll be on Instagram (@FromTheRightBank) if you’d like to follow along on my adventures. And I’ll see you here when I get back! Happy summer, all!

  1. Oh, Ally, that is SOOOO awesome and exciting! I simply cannot wait for the fall to see your house in print! I’ve been out of the loop but something told me to check back in and see what everyone was doing. Congrats again, friend!!

  2. So exciting, what you’ve just finished up and what’s ahead! I can’t wait to see your feature and getting a glimpse of that hallway has me wanting to pull the trigger on some zebras in our own home…such a great, classic statement!

  3. I’m so happy to read this. My home came out in the June Issue of Minneapolis St Paul Home and Design, and every time someone congratulates me I start in on this big thing about how anti-climactic it is….and then I remember myself and just say thank you. Because of course it is SO EXCITING! But at the same time, it is a long process and in a way that takes away from your feeling of the “big reveal” as it were. So. Congratulations, and I can’t wait to see the story!

    1. Thank you and congratulations to you too! For me, I think I feel at a loss because once the shoot was done, it seemed so quick compared to how long I’d been anticipating it. I had been so focused on getting ready for it, I had almost forgotten what else I did with my time before this all began! 🙂 I’m super excited about the publication of it though and will go through another whole wave of emotions when that happens, I’m sure! Thanks for sharing your experience!

  4. While of course I am so thrilled for you that the shoot went well…you know me, I am way more excited that you are going to Ethiopia! It is really a beautiful country, Ally. I did a story on the Surma people there in the Omo Valley – a trip that Remi made quite a few times. It is a three day drive from Addis-Abeba (or was, now – unfortunatley – there is a direct road) so we got to see quite a bit coming and going. Don’t forget to take it easy when you first arrive – it is a high altitude! But you know how to deal with that. 🙂 It just took me by surprise. Enjoy, enjoy!!!! Good things come to those who do good too. You deserve this and I can’t wait to hear more about it. Bisous…

    1. Thank you, Heather! I’m so excited I can hardly contain myself! You know this plan has been in the works for about a year and all that time I was thinking Africa + summer = hot. As it got closer I started looking at the weather and realized how high up it is (and that it’s actually very cool). That’s a bonus in my book although I’d be happy to go back to Africa no matter the climate! Hope all is well with you!

  5. Congrats on the house shoot! I’m excited to see it when it comes out! Wow ethiopia sounds amazing and like it will be an incredibly rewarding trip. I can’t wait to see photos!
